Competition Rules

HUNTINGDON VALLEY CAMERA CLUB
COMPETITION RULES

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Competition entries may be submitted only by dues-paying members in good standing.
  1. Any entry that has won an award (First Place through Honorable Mention) in any previous JCC Camera Club or Huntingdon Valley Camera Club (HVCC) competition, regardless of year won, is not eligible for future competitions.
  1. No entry may be submitted for competition more than two times, with the exception of the “Major Competition”.
  1. Photographs of paintings and photographs by other makers are never eligible.  Photographs of other works of art, such as statues, are eligible only if there is artistic interpretation.
  1. For competitions with a theme, all entries must meet the theme as determined by the chairperson of the competition.  The assigned theme must be the visually dominant factor of the image.
  1. Black and white photographs that are tinted with one color will be considered as a monochrome entry (PSA rules).  Black and white photographs tinted with more than one color will be entered as a color print.
  1. Unless there are unusual weather conditions, all entries must be submitted by 7:00 p.m. (15 minutes before the meeting start time).
  1. Enlargements may be either self or commercially made.

ENTRIES

  1. Each member may enter a maximum of three pictures per category.
  1. An entry form for each category will be provided.  Members submitting entries must complete the form with your name and a title for each entry submitted.
  1. There must be two entrants in a category for a qualified competition.  Otherwise the competition for that category will be cancelled.  However, the entrant may request a critique by the judge.

  2. Award stickers will be placed on the back mat of every winning print.

COMPETITION AWARDS

  1. Awards will be made in each category.  The number of awards in a category is based on 25% of the total entries in that category.  (Example:  12 entries will be eligible for three awards, first, second and third.)
  1. At the request of the judge, the Competition Committee Chairperson may grant permission to make additional awards.
  1. First Place, Second Place, Third Place and Honorable Mentions will be awarded as warranted above.

AWARD POINTS

  1. Award points will be given as follows:

    First Place                12 points
    Second Place             8 points
    Third Place                 5 points
    Honorable Mention     2 points

  2. A bonus of five additional points will be given to the entry selected by the judge as “Best in Show” from among all first place winners in all categories at that evening’s competition.

CATEGORIES

  1. 35mm Slides
  1. Monochrome Prints
  1. Color Prints
  1. Small Prints:  Members of the club for two years or less are the only members eligible to enter this category.

PRESENTATION OF ENTRIES

  1. Slides:  The maker must indicate how the slide is to be projected by spotting it in the lower left-hand corner.  The title of the slide must be on the same side as the spot.  The other side of the slide must show the maker’s name.
  1. Prints:  All monochrome and color prints must be matted or mounted on mounting board.  The overall size of the matted or mounted image must be between 11” x 14” (minimum) and 16” x 20” (maximum).  The back of the mat or  board must be labeled with the maker’s name and the title of the print.  An arrow indicating “Top” must also appear on the back.  Prints are not allowed to be presented in any frame, within glass or glasslike material, or held together by any type of clamp.
  1. Small Prints:  Small prints/snapshots, no larger than 4” x 6”, may not be mounted.  The back must be marked with the maker’s name and the title of the print.  Small prints will not be critiqued.  Award points and ribbons will be awarded in the same fashion as the other categories.  However, points earned in this category will not be counted toward the Annual Award for highest overall total points.

DIGITAL POSTING OF BEST IN SHOW

  1. Each month, the image selected as Best in Show will be posted on the HVCC  website, hvcameraclub.org.  The winning image should be provided promptly to the Newsletter Editor using one of the following methods:  (1) e-mail the image in jpeg format; (2) provide a 4 x 6 inch print of the image; or (3) provide the entry image for scanning and return to its maker at the next meeting.

SPECIAL RULES FOR MAJOR COMPETITION

The final competition, to be held in June of each club year, is an “Open Topic”.  Its purpose is to select the “Photograph of the Year”.

All first, second and third place winning images from the monthly competition are automatically eligible.  In addition, each member in good standing may submit two entries per category for Slides, Monochrome Prints and Color Prints.  These additional entries must have been entered previously in one of our monthly competitions during that club year.  No “new” entries may be submitted in the Major Competition.

Three judges will judge the entries in a manner prescribed by the Competition Committee.

Judges will not be asked to critique entries, as they have already been critiqued in previous competitions.

Except as noted above, monthly competition rules will apply.

ANNUAL AWARDS

  1. The following category awards will be presented at the annual banquet in June for the completed competition year:
    1. Highest Total Points per Category:  To the member who has achieved the highest number of points in each category.
    1. Second Place Award:  To the member with the second highest number of points in each category.
    1. Third Place Award:  To the member with the third highest number of points in each category.
    1. Winners in all categories of the Major Competition will be honored.
  1. Highest Overall Total Points:  “The President’s Trophy” will be awarded to the member who has achieved the highest total accumulated points for Monochrome, Color Print and Slide categories combined.  This trophy is to be kept by that member until it is passed on to the next overall points winner in the following year.  At that time, a small trophy will be given as a permanent award.
  1. The Sol Snyder Memorial Award (Photograph of the Year) will be the Best in Show of the Major Competition and will be awarded a trophy.
